GAMEPOLIS: Videogame industry from the South of Spain
Let me tell you how the Gamepolis 2018 was.
We started our journey at Sevilla at 7:00 am, Usually I suggest to arrive the day before, but this time we had no budget for it. Nearly the whole team was attending the event, and hotels or Airbnb were out of the budget. For those who don’t know, Gamepolis is a Videogames meeting held on Málaga. We went in tow different cars, because this time we were 7 travellers in total. Some of us came in couple. It is always good to share your passion with your couple, but this is a different topic we might approach in the future.
So in two different cars and with 15 minutes difference we arrived at Málaga Congress Hall. The Building is amazing and really well prepared given that Málaga and Costa del Sol is a very turistic area which have invested in events as part of their turistic offer. Once we arrived, the first team, let’s call them TEAM A 😉 went directly to the entrance, as we had booked (and paid) our tickets On line.
Tickets run out really fast
Here comes my first advice: Always book it online. I am sure you are already on the internet thing, but it could happen that you rely on last minute bargains or whatever… and you can suffer a slap on your face (non literally) when you arrive to the ticket booth an dyou check that everything is sold out, only in 3 hours.
As you may see in the picture, the queue was kind of a non-ending snake along the big garden just in front of the Congress Hall entrance. More than 50.000 videogamers have passed by the event during the weekend. But, I must say that the organisation was really well prepared, because despite de big affluence, the queue moved really fast, and although it was hot I didn’t suffered to much waiting (I brought this cool summer hat with me :D)
Once inside, Hulk welcomed us. It’s true that the face looks quite weird, but believe me, there is no other big green purple trousers wearing fellow in this kind of events, so it had to be Hulk. Why Hulk? You might be thinking that he (or it?) was part of some show presenting some Marvel’s videogame, but I don’t think really so. It was just big, and scary, and cool. And that works!
After a quick tour around the Hall 1, we noticed several things:
- There was not much difference between the ambience there and a Manga Meeting (like Mangafest in Sevilla) or Fiction Meeting (Comic-Con style) but smaller.
- Shops and souvenirs have a big protagonism.
- Indie zone was not really well promoted, but we finally found it in Hall B.
- Audience for this event is mainly teenagers.
- Food and beverage are always expensive in this kind of events (no comment about quality, so you better bring a sandwich with you).
- Talks are the reason we came here, so let’s check how interesting they are.
The talks at Gamepolis
We previously signed in for a good bunch of talks, as our main interest was learing about videogames industry, in Spain and globally speaking. So we were attending the talks from Nacho Requena about the videogames new magazine named “Manual”. The have achieved an unpredicted success with their first issue, whose 1.000 units were also sold in few months. The question of the weekend has been, would you issue again the first issue? And the answer is No.
The second issue, launched one day before the Gamepolis, was also a big success, as 60% was already sold. Nacho highlighted the difference against other videogames magazines. With a delightful cover, inspired in fashion high quality magazines, Manual approaches the videogame industry focusing in people and their impact in development and the industry.
Music in videogames
Juanjo Molina, music composer, explained the vidoegame music process. He went through a wide explanation, adressing different ways of layering the soundtracks (horizontal layout, vertical layout, layering, branching, etc). Juanjo was really pedagogic, and in a short time, he gave us a brief view about what has to be done during a videogame development, from a short budget game (mobile as an example) to a AAA.
David Martinez told us some interesting points about female characters the evolution in the game industry. However, the main activity during this talk was the Q&A phase.
Unfortunately, once back to Gamepolis we lost Marta García‘s talk about Square Enix. We had a meeting at Pizza Hut out of the Congress Hall. Due to this reason, we spent too much time for lunch. After the lunch break we came directy to the Gamepolis indie zone where we met some developpers. Some of them come from Sevilla and are integrated in the Play Station Talents program. Their games are really interesting and specially because they are in a late stage of development. Some of them are about to launch their games. Don’t miss them or you will regret.
Local indie studios at Gamepolis
On the other hand, we also met some local indie studios. We would like to highlight Afterlight a narrative adventure, inspired in Sci-Fi games and slightly inspired in Warhammer40,000. At the same time is related to the principles of ILEKUN (our game, you should already know this). So we are following really close this project. Maybe we could also collaborate somehow in the future. There are some paralelism, not only in the game but in the roadmap to be followed, as they are also planning to launch a Kickstarter next year. We encourage you to have a look and follow them.
Youtubers had also some room at Gamepolis
The last talk we attended at Gamepolis was somehow amazing. The famous youtuber, Mr. Dayoscript did it. And he did his show as a actual Rockstar does. The Gamepolis audiotorium was completely full. Thanks we had signed up we could come in the first round. As we were already in, we can’t know how many people could not come, but the second queue was already huge when we came in. IHowever, in regards the content of the talk, I prefer not to give any feedback, because I think we were not his audience. Short after that show, we had to go back home.
Gamepolis in summary:
- Gamepolis is not Gamsecom or even Gamelab
- The event is adressed mainly to young videogames lovers rather than professionals
- It is a fun event and we recommend it
- Price is affordable if you buy it on line (or if you pay for it whith special pizza offer)
- When you have the opportunity, buy the 3 days pass.
- Next year we are bringing our game “ILEKUN” so you should attend and try it.
See you there next year, folks!
